UEFA’s Top 10 Best European Clubs Of The Decade Have Been Announced – SPORTbible

Statistically the best European football clubs of the past decade have been revealed by the IFFHS – with Liverpool failing to make the top 10.

The outcome is decided by taking into account every team’s continental ranking points for each season over the past 10 years – then totalling them all up. And Lionel Messi’s side are just in front: 2,877 points to Real’s 2,782.

While Real Madrid won four Champions League titles to Barcelona’s two from 2011 to 2020, it’s perhaps no shock to see Barca edge ahead due to their superior domestic trophy record. Barcelona picked up six La Liga titles to Real’s three in that time.

The highest-placed Premier League team, however sees a joint finish: Chelsea and Manchester City in a tie for a surprisingly low eighth spot.

That’s likely a reflection of how competitive the Premier League is, with five different winners in 10 years.

Chelsea won twice, but also won a Champions League in 20212 and the Europa League twice. Man City have won the most domestic trophies by far, but struggled in Europe.

Manchester United are ninth – thanks to a pair of league title wins, plus success in domestic cups and a Europa League win. Arsenal, bafflingly, are 10th – the continental points system must rank FA Cup wins fairly high.

No place for Liverpool in the top 10, however – and perhaps that isn’t as shocking as it might first seem. The Reds became a formidable machine under Jurgen Klopp at the end of the decade, claiming a Champions League and a Premier League title in style.

But the earlier, pre-Klopp half of the decade saw the Reds struggling for silverware and league position.

Third place in the overall IFFHS ranking is easily taken by German giants Bayern Munich (winners of two Champions League titles), while Paris Saint-Germain are perhaps surprisingly fourth. Reward for their huge domestic dominance in France.
