JACKSON – The final week of the regular season is often conference championship week for most basketball teams across Michigan, as league races finally cross the finish line.

Tuesday saw several key races hit overdrive, as the Big Eight Conference held pivotal matchups, the Lenawee County Athletic Association was decided and the SEC White Division saw critical results in both boys and girls basketball action.

Below is a full recap of all the action from the Jackson-area prep basketball action from Tuesday, March 17, 2021.

NOTE: Any games that do not appear in the roundup were either not reported to the MHSAA or not provided by the respective team’s coach.

GIRLS

Chelsea 49, Jackson 21

The Bulldogs secured an outright SEC White Conference championship Tuesday with a road win over the Vikings.

Maya Pierce finished with five points, six rebounds and two steals to pace the Vikings (6-3), while Keiyera Johnson added five points, two rebounds and two steals, Madison Wagner had four points and seven steals and Kaylin Moorehead added four points, nine rebounds and two steals.

Lumen Christi 61, Battle Creek Harper Creek 35

Caitee Webster knocked down six 3-pointers and finished with 18 points to pace the Titans (8-5), while Chloe Pryson added 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, Allison O’Dowd had 13 points and six rebounds, Anna Doane added eight points and eight rebounds and Khiya Hunt had seven points, six steals and six assists.

Western hosts Northwest in girls basketball

Jackson Northwest 52, Hastings 17

The Mounties raced out to a 30-9 advantage in the first half and rolled to an Interstate Eight Conference win Tuesday night.

Layne Sleight finished with 18 points, including 16 in the first half, to lead Northwest (10-3), while Mallory Anspaugh and Megan Swartz each added seven points and Ashley Weller and Maddie Nietzke each added six points.

“We were really good on the defensive end tonight,” said Northwest head coach Ryan Carroll. “I was proud of our effort at that end. We were also good in transition early, which really got us going. Our girls moved the ball well, and we got some nice sparks from players throughout the game.”

Parma Western hosts Harper Creek in girls basketball

Parma Western 55, Marshall 46

The Panthers took an early 19-8 lead and fended off the Redhawks in the second half for an Interstate Eight Conference win Tuesday night.

Alyna Lewis finished with 24 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead Western (12-4), while Riley Kubiak added eight points and six rebounds, Reece Hitt had eight points and Nicole Shellburg added seven points.

Byron 54, Michigan Center 49

Shea Tripped finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and one block to lead the Cardinals (8-2), while Julia Reynolds added 11 points and three assists, and Anna Reynolds, Madi Bradley and Samantha Wynn each added six points.

Napoleon 44, Manchester 42

Becca Daoust knocked down a pair of free throws with 4.5 seconds remaining in the game to give the Pirates a late lead and secure a Cascades Conference win over the Flying Dutch on Tuesday night.

Daoust finished with 17 points to lead Napoleon (4-5), while Hannah Negus added eight points and 11 rebounds, Bailey Vickery had 10 points and Lily McDonald added five points.

Mia Steele finished with 12 points to lead Manchester (5-8), while Cassidy Reames added 11 points and Jordyn Porter added 10 points.

Bronson 44, Jonesville 30

Corryn Berlin finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three steals to lead the Comets (11-3), while Kenzie Baker added four points, Emma Rounds had four points and four steals, Brianna Hansen added four points, three steals and three rebounds and Marissa Lehman had four points.

Jonesville will look to clinch at least a share of the Big Eight Conference on Thursday with a home game against Reading (5-7).

Michigan Center battles Columbia Central in girls basketball district final

Columbia Central 60, Hillsdale 30

The Golden Eagles took a 36-13 advantage in the first half and rolled to an LCAA road win over the Hornets on Tuesday night. Columbia Central officially clinches its third straight league title with the road win.

Taiya Fletcher finished with 23 points to pace Columbia Central (12-3), while Tadessa Brown added 14 points and eight rebounds and Zoie Bamm added 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Sarah Korn scored nine points to lead Hillsdale, while Shae Arnold added six points.

Homer 46, Reading 42

The Trojans outscored the Rangers 16-7 in the fourth quarter, including 11-of-14 free throws, to secure a Big Eight Conference road win Tuesday night.

Paige Austin finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals to pace Homer (9-5), while Kennedy Miller added 13 points, 13 rebounds and three assists and Brooke McCone had 11 points and three assists.

Stockbridge 53, Leslie 39

Gwen Rogozinski scored 18 points to lead the Panthers, while Grace Hall added 13 points and 10 rebounds, Madison Mazuca had nine points and five rebounds, and Grace Robidou knocked down two 3-pointers to finish with six points.

Stockbridge (12-2, 10-1) will travel to Olivet (13-2, 10-1) on Thursday with the GLAC league title on the line.

Chelsea 57, Jackson 27

The Bulldogs blitzed out a 26-5 lead over the Vikings and rolled to an SEC White home win Tuesday night.

Lucas Hanifan scored 16 points to lead Chelsea, while Jordan Fansler added 13 points and Joey Cabana had nine points and Dominic Guthre and Matt Blanton each had six points.

Dylan Hartzell finished with 11 points to lead Jackson (1-8), while Gibson Drummond added five points and Tavion Tanner had four points.

Chelsea (11-2, 8-1 SEC White) will travel to Dexter (12-3, 7-2 SEC White) on Friday at 7 p.m. with a chance to secure an outright league championship.

Marshall 56, Parma Western 52 (OT)

The Panthers took a late lead on a Landon French 3-pointer with 21 seconds left in regulation but the Redhawks answered back with a field goal at the buzzer to force overtime. In the extra session, Marshall held Western scoreless and knocked down four free-throw attempts to secure a dramatic Interstate Eight Conference win Tuesday night.

French finished with 17 points to pace Western (3-7), while Trey Cottingham added 12 points, Devin Bowers had seven points and seven steals and Gavin Price added six points and seven rebounds.

“This was a gut-wrenching loss but I was pleased with how our guys fought tonight,” said Western head coach Ryan Mulnix. “Marshall is a really good team and I think we took a step in the right direction as we look to be playing our best basketball come district time. I am disappointed in our rebounding, but we will work on that tomorrow in practice.”

Hastings 52, Jackson Northwest 50

The Saxons took an early 13-5 lead and fended off the Mounties in the second half to secure an Interstate Eight Conference win Tuesday night.

Dawson White finished with 22 points to pace Northwest (4-11), while Duncan Moffitt added 11 points.

Leslie vs. Olivet

Leslie 39, Stockbridge 37

The Blackhawks fended off a third-quarter rally by the Panthers and outscored their rivals 12-9 in the final frame to secure a hard-fought GLAC road win Tuesday night and secure at least a share of the league championship.

Tristan Feighner finished with 11 points to lead Leslie (12-1), while Lucas McDaniel added nine points and Nolan Frohriep added eight points.

Jeremy Pilch scored 17 points to lead Stockbridge (7-8).

Jackson Christian 56, Waldron 45

AJ Cartwright led the Royals with 15 points, while Blaine Spry added 12 points, and Adam Khon and Derek Sanford each added eight points.
