High School Girls Basketball: Cards keep cruising – West Central Tribune

The Cardinals bumped that number up to 11 after defeating the Storm 66-43 from the Big Red Gym at Willmar High School.

Suffering a 57-52 loss at Fergus Falls on Monday, Willmar’s win over Sauk Rapids closed out conference play as the Cardinals finished with a 12-3 record.

“Nice to be back in our gym and in the red uniforms,” Willmar head coach Dustin Carlson said. “We played hard and fast the whole game. Nice bounce back after the tough Fergus loss.”

Forced turnovers and free throws were the Cardinals’ two biggest difference makers to get separation in the first half.

Shortly after the opening tip, Storm sophomore center Mia Rogholt knocked down a pair of free throws and hit a basket inside on back-to-back possessions as the visitors trailed 5-4 in the early going. From there, Sauk Rapids was held without a field goal in its next 18 possessions spanning 8 minutes, 15 seconds.

Willmar caused eight turnovers within that drought and scored 19 of the game’s next 20 points.

Working off an Emily Staska screen from the top of the key, Cardinals senior guard Mackenzie Jones made a driving layup to make it 14-4 as the road team called a timeout with 11:19 left before halftime.

Jones pushed the lead up to 22-5 after another layup and forced the Storm another timeout two minutes later. Following a pair of Jones free throws, Sauk Rapids finally broke its dry spell on a 3-pointer from Grace Roesch.

The Cardinals did the rest of their foul line. Willmar nailed 16 free throws in the first half after entering the bonus in the first eight minutes. Jones made the final pair of free throws to give the hosts a 41-16 lead entering halftime.

Willmar finished 26-for-36 from the foul line and forced 33 turnovers.

Jones led all players with 16 points and seven rebounds. Junior forward Ella Shinn added 12 points while junior guard Jaida Reiman had nine points and eight rebounds.

Roesch led the Storm with 14 points.
